Description
Offered for auction is this rare and beautiful cased, rose-cut-to-alabaster, art glass vase, made, most likely, by Steuben, around 1920. The floral decorated vase sits in a Rogers Smith Quadruple-silver-plate holder - the holder has the company's insignia, 'Rogers Smith & Co / Meriden CT / Quadruple' impressed on the holder's bottom, along with the number '71' (the signature is so small, it was difficult to photograph it - see last picture). Steuben acid cutback articles are fairly rare - a total of only about 1,800 vase and non-vase articles were made (refer to page 7 of John Shuman's book, 'The Collector's encyclopedia of American Art Glass', 2006). In addition, it was extremely rare for Steuben to put their vases in silver-plate holders: of the approximately 1,500 vase shapes made by Steuben, only 6 shapes were made for holders (refer to Steuben vase shapes shown on pages 246 through 304 of the Gardner book). Though I do not have data regarding how many holder-based acid cutback/etched vases Steuben Glassworks made, a simple extrapolation of the data sited would mean that a total of only about 7 holder-based ACB (Acid Cutback) vases were made by Steuben. That is my rationale for claiming this vase to be a very rare holder-based ACB Steuben vase. The vase is unsigned - ACB articles were seldom signed by Steuben. This vase is in Steuben shape number 7201 (refer to page 291 of the Gardner book). Also, though jade-cut-to-alabaster is the more common color combination for Steuben ACB articles, the rarer rose-cut-to-alabaster is a well-documented color combination for Steuben ACB articles (look at the photo of rose-cut-to-alabaster vases shown on Plate XXV, figure C, of Gardner's book). When in the holder, the vase measures 9 inches in height and 7 inches in width (holder's handle-tip to handle-tip). The glass part is 7 inches in height and 5 inches wide at the top. The glass part is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks or repairs. The holder is also in excellent condition, with only minimal, expected, age-related tarnishing to the silver-plating (see picture on 5th row). The glass vase's bottom has a small alabaster prunt applied to the vase's pontil - the prunt fits perfectly in the holder's bottom hole (see pictures on 5th row). Also, the vase fits perfectly in the holder. So, I am pretty sure the holder is original to the vase. This is a NO RESERVE auction. Thanks for looking. To the winning bidder: please wait for an invoice from me before paying.N.B. Viewers have expressed different opinions about the maker of this vase: Mt Washington, Cambridge, etc. If you feel this is not a Steuben vase, please do NOT bid.
